Amorepacific Museum of Art

The Founder of Amorepacific, Suh Sung-whan, had a beautiful vision that extended far beyond the products he created. He was also an avid patron of the arts, and spent much of his life collecting traditional and contemporary art. Suh Sung-whan founded a museum in 1979 to house his art collection and share his love of art with others, in keeping with his philosophy to contribute to humanity by creating beauty.

Today the Amorepacific Museum of Art (APMA) is dedicated to carrying on his legacy by championing the arts through exhibitions, publications, and by supporting a range of academic activity.

In 2017, APMA will embark on an exciting new chapter that will see the museum move to a sophisticated space in Yongsan, Seoul. The expansion will make it possible for the museum to deepen its commitment to the arts by enhancing the depth and breadth of its offerings. Diverse exhibitions featuring traditional and contemporary Korean art as well as works by foreign artists will flow seamlessly with spaces designed to accommodate educational programs, an art archive, and a variety of other art-related presentations. Through such multidimensional pursuits, APMA aims to create a Korean arena for the arts that is a rich and dynamic part of the global arts community.

The Museum is designed by internationally acclaimed architect David Chipperfield. Enriched by his keen understanding of the tradition and history of the concerning regions, Chipperfield’s outstanding architectural outcomes embody his characteristic design philosophy focused on the following elements: simplicity and clearness, the assimilation with nature, and the use of up-to-date technology and materials.

APMA sets its sights on being a plaza where artists and the public communicate with each another through art as a common human language, and where Korean culture and world one encounter each other. A plaza serves as a windpipe through which a city breathes, as a cultural forest and as an empty open space. With its new opening slated for 2017, APMA has already embarked on a journey to its dream that is promised to be realized in the near future. The Museum is subject to temporary closure and will slated for late 2017.
